About Sleep Apnea & Our New Sleep Apnea Mouthpiece
Sleep apnea, which now requires our brand new sleep apnea mouthpiece to be fixed is a disorder in which pauses in breathing occur along with times of extremely and abnormally low breathing while asleep. This can cause a whole array of problems including snoring and not getting enough oxygen to the brain. The sufferer may be unaware that they are suffering because they are asleep while suffering. They become accustomed to the side effects of the disorder, which amount to daytime sleepiness and fatigue. Oftentimes, this disorder is noticed by other people who notice the sufferer doesn’t know how to stop snoring and they keep breathing abnormally while their asleep. Rarely does one make the connection to daytime sleepiness or fatigue to the dangers of snoring.
In central sleep apnea there is an imbalance in the part of the brain that controls the respiratory activity. This causes the brain to fail to give the signal to inhale in some cases, meaning that cycles of breathing are missed and oxygen levels are dropped. This can cause serious problems in the brain. The more common problem, however, is obstructive apnea. Obstructive is the common occurrence of the collapsible walls of the throat closing up due to the soft tissue making them up. This obstructs breathing and causes the sleeper to miss a breath at times and sometimes causes either oxygen levels to become to low or carbon dioxide levels to become too high. It can also lead to severe snoring and deprivation while asleep, for both the sufferer and the sufferer’s sleeping partner. This can also lead to restless sleepiness as the sleeper unconsciously tries to get comfortable and find a good position to lie in so that they can breathe better.
This is not something that is remembered in the morning by the sufferer, but again, it is remembered by the sufferers partner. Sometimes lifestyle changes can be a good remedy for the disorder, including sleeping at a 30 degree reclining angle, avoiding alcohol, losing weight, quitting smoking or avoiding muscle relaxers. Obesity seems to be the most common factor contributing to the disorder, but is not the only contributing factor. However, those who are overweight, especially those with diabetes, have more of a chance of developing an obstructive sleep disorder. This is often due to the resulting large neck circumference. There is also a more rare form of sleep apnea where the suffer is suffering from more than one cause of sleep apnea, both central and obstructive. This can cause problems in treating the disorder. For the sake of this article, let’s focus on obstructive. Medications in the form of oxygen pills are sometimes used, but are discouraged due to side effects.
Some people find help using a device known as a CPAP. This stands for continuous positive airway pressure. This is a machine that is strapped to the sleepers face and connected to his or her airways and connected to a machine that forces air through a hose to the airways of the sufferer. This prevents the airways from becoming obstructed by forcing air through the airways. The CPAP may by cumbersome, but it comes with no side effects unlike medication. For those who may find the CPAP too obstructive, there is another option, the sleep apnea mouth piece. The online sleep apnea mouthpiece is a simpler and cheaper solution. The cheapest, of course, is the ready made solution. The ready made solution is a mouthpiece that can be ordered and is more of a “one size fits all” solution. This is the most affordable and easiest option. Many people find relief with these options. They help to open the airways in the throat so that someone suffering from obstructive apnea can breathe more easily. Some people find that the more “one size fits all” solutions do not work for them. They may need to go to their dentist to have a special mouthpiece made and cast specifically to fit their mouth. This may be the only way to stop snoring effectively. In this case the patient may need to site in the dentist chair while the dentist fits a putty to their teeth and jaw structure.
This putty is left to set for a few minutes so it can dry and harden. When it is dry it will be made into a plastic mold made from the shape of the hardened and dried putty. This process may be long and hard to sit through for some patients, but if the “one size fits all” option doesn’t work, it may be the only option. In addition, the patient may find that the first mouthpiece made at the dentist’s office does not work correctly. One should not be discouraged by this as it may take several tries before the cast is gotten just right and it is made in just the right fashion so that the airways are no longer obstructed. This can be frustrating for the sufferer, having to sit through the process multiple times, but the sufferer needs to remain vigilant and determined to solve the problem for their own sake.
The sufferer may not realize it, but the piece may help them more than they realize. It can help them be more wakeful during the day, and more restful during the night. Sleep apnea can be a problem for both the sufferer and the sufferers partner. While it may not be an apparent problem, it is an important problem that needs to be fixed as quickly as possible to get rid of the side effects. The side effects are often not realized until after the problem is solved, so treatment in the form of the mouth piece is often not tried. But once obstructive apnea is suspected, it should be investigated and fixed as soon as possible so that the negative side effects can be ended as soon as possible. Sleep disorders can be dangerous in its most extreme forms, and unpleasant in any form. So without delay, try 1 if any disorders is suspected.
